What Do SPAN400 and SPAN500 Mean?

In English, SPAN means the distance between supports - a span, spacing or run. SPAN400 and SPAN500 refer to the spacing of the aluminium scaffold rungs, the members that carry the working deck or platform: 414 mm and 500 mm respectively.

This has two implications. First, the platform height can be adjusted in steps of 0.4 m or 0.5 m, so together with adjustable legs the scaffold can reach any height. Second, from a safety point of view a gap of more than 0.5 m is already a large opening and a hazard for the operator.

SPAN500 is therefore the widest spacing available for aluminium scaffolding. The most popular model on the market is YANGST SPAN400: its spacing is well judged, it needs no separate ladder and it uses the fewest components, so use, transport and storage are all simple and quick. SPAN500 models, by contrast, all require a ladder - and the built-in ladder is the weak point of the whole frame, which damages easily and reduces durability and service life.
