Technical Points for Mobile Aluminium Scaffolds Above 20 m

But the industry has to face a hard reality: with no national standard or code in force, the market is flooded with a mixture of copies and imitations. Under EN 1004, mobile aluminium scaffolds above 12 m carry very significant risk. The standard requires that any mobile working platform above 12 m must have design documentation issued by a professional company and engineer, who then carry lifetime responsibility for the safety and use of the product.

Above 20 m, design and erection must satisfy safety requirements and must also recognise that, once handed over, users are generally not professional people working at height. The design must therefore guarantee safe and efficient work.

When developing the design, the following factors must be taken into account:

1) non-professionals must be able to erect and operate a 20 m product safely after brief training;
2) reduce the fear non-professionals feel at height when a 20 m tower moves - this matters a great deal;
3) two or three people must be able to move the tower easily;
4) a mobile aluminium platform above 20 m is expensive, so the product must be designed for at least 20 years of service.
