YANGST Aluminium Scaffolding Supports Asia Largest Metro Station Project

Panyu Square station on the Guangzhou Metro is now open and operating. It is the interchange of Lines 18, 22 and 3, where the finishings in the interchange hall were extremely difficult and the programme very tight. YANGST aluminium scaffolding was engaged by China Railway Decoration and entered the underground interchange hall in March 2021, mainly to provide mobile aluminium scaffolding for the ceiling works inside the station.

Panyu Square is a five-level underground station serving Lines 18, 22 and 3, plus the planned Line 17. China Railway 11th Bureau carried out the civil works, mined tunnelling, shield driving, track laying and MEP. As the largest station in Asia and the most striking in the Greater Bay Area, it has four distinctive features:

Largest scale. Panyu Square is the largest metro station in Asia, with a total floor area of nearly 200,000 square metres. The excavation is 540 m by 50 m in plan and 43 m deep, with a total excavated volume of 1.08 million cubic metres, of which 500,000 cubic metres was rock.

Exceptional depth. At 43 m, the excavation is one of the deepest metro excavations in China.

Extremely hard rock. Rock strength reaches 126 MPa, making diaphragm wall trenching and rock excavation very difficult.

Very high risk. The site sits close to the operating Line 3 and to high-rise buildings, with an ultra-deep excavation; at the north end a large-section mined tunnel passes 2.8 m beneath the operating Line 3; at the south end three parallel large-section tunnels run with small clear spacing.

All the aluminium scaffolding work took place on the fourth basement level. Every component was lowered into the basement by crane and then erected by a specialist crew. Over three to four months of work, YANGST's products and erection experience earned the support and praise of managers and colleagues at China Railway.
